In May, 35 new beneficiaries were certified by the Peruvian Navy as artisanal fishermen.

With the aim of enhancing fishing skills and encouraging the formalization of artisanal fishermen of Chincha and Cañete, which are areas of influence of PERU LNG, the company has been carrying out a training program with the National Merchant Navy School.

The closing ceremony of the first edition of the 2018 training program, which benefited 20 fishermen from the Embarcados de Tambo de Mora Association, in Chincha, and 15 from Cordeleros de Herbay Bajo in Cañete, was held on June 1st. The event, which certified the beneficiaries as “artisanal fishermen”, was attended by representatives of the Fishermen’s Association, the “Almirante Miguel Grau” National Merchant Navy School, and PERU LNG.

In this way, more than 100 fishermen have been certified through the program, which was launched under the agreement signed by PERU LNG with the National Merchant Navy School in 2017.  It should be noted that, in the first year of the agreement, 67 fishermen were trained and certified.

The implemented program consists of a two-week course, in the form of boarding school, in the facilities of the National Merchant Navy School located in the constitutional province of Callao. The beneficiaries receive theoretical training and practice on fishing techniques. After passing the courses, they obtain an I.D. Card of artisanal fishing water-sailor personnel issued by the Peruvian Navy.

On the other hand, the formalization of artisanal fishermen allows them to access funding sources managed by the Fisheries development Fund – FONDEPES. It also increases their employability, since it allows them to apply for formal jobs in companies belonging to the fisheries sector.

For 2018, the program contemplates carrying out three editions of the training course. Thirty-five fishermen of the area of influence of the PERU LNG plant will participate in each of the editions.
