The Pipeline

The PERU LNG gas pipeline is an impressive piece of infrastructure that represents a milestone in the history of engineering in Peru. The gas pipeline runs for 408 kilometers through one of the most diverse geographies in the world, including abrupt, hard-to-reach mountain areas, multiple rivers and coastal deserts. Its highest point is over 4 900 meters above sea level, which earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest gas pipeline in the world.

Pipeline location

The starting point is located approximately at kilometer 211 of the Transportadora del Gas del Peru S.A. (TGP) gas pipeline, in the community of Chiquintirca, Ayacucho Region, on the southern Peruvian Andes. It ends at the PERU LNG natural gas liquefaction plant of PERU LNG, located on the Peruvian coast.

Integrity Management System

The Pipeline Integrity Management System is a process that seeks to provide a safe and reliable natural gas transportation service, controlling the risks inherent to the operation to preserve the safety of our personnel, the communities and the environment.

What does PERU LNG focus on?

The Sustainability Policy of PERU LNG includes the following commitments:

  • Adopt a risk-based management approach that works to anticipate and mitigate potential impacts in our operations.
  • Maintain the integrity of equipment and processes to ensure efficient, reliable and effective operations that maximizes availability and safety.

At PERU LNG we are focused on maintaining the integrity of the equipment and components that make up the Pipeline, to achieve a safe operation to preserve the integrity of the communities, the environment and the personnel, and which, in turn, improves the availability of transportation of the Pipeline and production of the Plant, guaranteeing an efficient operation.

Monitoring activities

The aim of these activities is to collect relevant information, such as any findings that may affect the integrity of the pipeline in order to analyze it in detail and determine the corresponding actions

Inspections

These activities are carried out with the purpose of detecting anomalies in the system that could, given certain conditions, represent a threat to the integrity of the pipeline. Among the most used inspection activities in our system we have the inspection with internal tools, better known as “PIGS” which travel inside the pipeline detecting any anomalous situation that could jeopardize the operation of the pipeline.

Creating awareness in damage prevention

It is a set of activities that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of the pipeline for the economic development of the country, as well as the restrictions that exist for the development of human activities in areas near the Right of Way in order to mitigate the risk of damage to the pipeline and accidents.

Management activities

This category includes a group of activities for the continuous verification of the Integrity Management System and the training of personnel on issues related to the safety of the pipeline.

Damage prevention program

This is a program implemented by PERU LNG to train and raise awareness among the populations neighboring the pipeline on how to act in emergency situations, to show the restrictions for the development of economic activities and in general the recommendations for safe coexistence in areas near the pipeline.

Objectives of the Damage Prevention Program

The Damage Prevention Program of PERU LNG has the following objectives:

  • Inform the population in a clear and precise way on the activities carried out by PERU LNG to maintain a safe and reliable operation.
  • Complete the annual training and education program on pipeline safety focused on the population, authorities and emergency response teams located within the direct area of influence of PERU LNG.
  • Train the population on how to respond to emergencies and leakage situations in order to minimize the impact on the communities surrounding the pipeline.
  • Increase the ability to detect anomalous situations (force majeure, third-party activities and/or leaks) with the support of the communities in the area of influence.
  • Promote awareness on the need for notifications prior to the execution of tasks related to excavations, construction, agricultural activities, etc. in nearby areas, and/or within the Pipeline Right of Way by third parties.
  • Promote cooperation between local and regional authorities such as the National Police and other State agencies to mitigate the risk of third-party damages; also, to provide support in case of events related to natural gas leaks and/or emergencies.

What measures does PERU LNG use to ensure safety in the pipeline?

  • PERU LNG has protection measures in the populated areas located near the pipeline.
  • The pipeline walls are thicker than recommended by international standards and are externally coated to prevent mechanical and corrosion damage, and have a cathodic protection system along their entire length.
  • The pipeline is encased with concrete in the areas where it crosses rivers and streams.
  • There are locking valves to isolate the system in case of failures.
  • PERU LNG oversees the operations of the pipeline along its route 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • PERU LNG ejecuta actividades de mantenimiento al Ducto siguiendo las mejores prácticas de la industria, cumpliendo y excediendo los requerimientos de la regulación peruana y normativa internacional.

If there is a leak in the pipeline, how do you recognize it?

Pipeline leaks are uncommon, but you can identify them if you notice:

  • Dust that comes out of a hole in the ground.
  • Continuous bubbles in wet or flooded areas.
  • Dead or discolored vegetation in an area that should be green.
  • Fire, if the leak is lit.

Or, if you hear:

  • A hissing sound caused by the gas leakage.
  • And if you have witnessed or suspected any activity carried out by third parties that could cause damage to the pipeline, please contact PERU LNG immediately.

What to do if you suspect there is a leak in the pipeline?

  • Move away from the area in the opposite direction of the wind.
  • DO NOT touch, inhale, or make contact with the leaking gases.
  • DO NOT attempt to extinguish a natural gas fire.
  • DO NOT attempt to operate any of the pipe valves.
  • DO NOT light matches or motors.
  • DO NOT use electronic equipment near the area where natural gas leakage is suspected.
  • DO NOT dump garbage or cuttings on the right-of-way. In addition to being illegal, this activity could jeopardize the integrity of the pipeline.

What activities do you want to do?

  • Agriculture and livestock:
You should not plant deep-rooted trees near the pipeline. Contact PERU LNG before using agricultural tractors near the pipeline.

  • Construction:
This includes the construction of housing or infrastructure, roads and tracks, laying of drainage and/or water pipes. You must not excavate or conduct work in the areas near the pipeline. Call us if you see any heavy machinery activity near the pipeline.
