Camelid Sanitary Management Program and Participatory Marine Monitoring Program are distinguished by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy and the organization Peru 2021, respectively.
The year 2009 ended with good news for PERU LNG as three of its programs under implementation as part of its social responsibility program were recognized in competitions held by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE) and by Peru 2021 and the PUCP.
The first program recognized by the SNMPE in the category of "Efforts to promote local development" was the Camelid Health Management Program, which won first place in the "Sustainable Development Award 2009. Recognizing the importance of camelids as the main socioeconomic activity in the area, PERU LNG decided to implement this program in order to improve the health of camelids in the high Andean communities in the area of direct influence of the project, thus generating economic improvements for the breeders.
As part of the program, more than 119,000 camelids were vaccinated. These camelids transfer immunity to their offspring, which are born protected, thus ensuring that the program is sustainable over time. More than 1,000 alpaca-breeding families also benefited from training through numerous courses and workshops on the identification of the main diseases affecting camelids. Finally, veterinary kits were delivered, encouraging trained breeders to offer their services to other localities.
Another program recognized by the SNMPE in the "Effort and Environmental Protection" category was the Biodiversity Action Plan, which received an Honorable Mention. This program contemplates a comprehensive strategy that involves the adoption of specific actions aimed at protecting and conserving the biological resources found in the project's direct area of influence.
In the "Environment" category, the Participatory Marine Monitoring Program also won second place in the Peru 2021 Award for Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. Initiated in September 2006, this program includes the study of different components such as marine currents, water quality, sediments, marine microorganisms and fishing.
This program deserves recognition because it has surpassed and exceeded the parameters required in the Socio-Environmental Impact Study because it monitors a larger area than stipulated and does so in a participatory manner, involving the fishermen of the area, local institutions and governments, NGOs, and some central government agencies such as IMARPE, INRENA, DICAPI and PRODUCE.
"Receiving these awards encourages us to continue with our social responsibility programs that benefit our neighboring communities and allow us to contribute to their progress," said Barbara Bruce, the company's general manager.
