The PERU LNG pipeline is an impressive construction project that represents a milestone in the history of engineering in Peru.
The pipeline crosses 408 kilometers of one of the most diverse geographies in the world, with mountainous, abrupt and hard-to-reach areas, numerous river crossings, as well as coastal desert. Along its route the pipeline reaches more than 4,900 meters above sea level, which has earned it the Guinness World Record for the highest pipeline in the world.
LOCATION
The approximate starting point is at kilometer 211 of the Transportadora de Gas del Peru S.A. (TGP) pipeline, in the community of Chiquintirca, in the Ayacucho region, south of the Andes, while its end point is the PERU LNG natural gas processing plant, which is located on the Peruvian coast.
INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM
The Integrity Management System that applies to the Pipeline is a process that seeks to provide a safe and reliable natural gas transportation service, by controlling the risks inherent to the operation to preserve the safety of our personnel, the communities, and the environment.
WHAT DOES PERU LNG FOCUS ON?
The Sustainability Policy implemented by PERU LNG includes the following commitments:
- Adopt a risk-based management approach, working to anticipate and mitigate potential impacts on our operations.
- Maintain the integrity of all our equipment and processes to ensure an efficient, reliable, and effective operation that maximizes availability and safety.
At PERU LNG we are focused on maintaining the integrity of the equipment and components that make up the pipeline, in order to achieve safe operation aimed at preserving the integrity of the communities, the environment, and the personnel, and which, in turn, improves the availability of transportation of the pipeline and production of the plant, to make sure they can be operated efficiently.
Monitoring activities
These are activities aimed at collecting relevant information, such as any findings that may affect the integrity of the pipeline, which are then analyzed in detail so as to determine the corresponding actions.
Inspections
The purpose of these activities is to detect anomalies in the system that could, under certain conditions, represent a threat to the integrity of the pipeline. The most common inspection activities in our system include the inspection with internal tools, also known as “PIGS", which travel inside the pipeline in order to detect any anomalous situation that could put at risk the pipeline operation.
DAMAGE PREVENTION AWARENESS
This is a set of activities aimed at raising awareness about the importance of the pipeline for the economic development of the country, as well as the restrictions that exist for the performance of human activities in areas near the right-of-way in order to mitigate the risk of accidents and damage to the pipeline.
Management activities
This category includes the continuous verification activities of the Integrity Management System and the training of personnel in issues related to the safety of the pipeline.

damage prevention program
This is a program implemented by PERU LNG to train and raise awareness among the populations neighboring the pipeline on how to act in emergency situations, to show them the restrictions for the development of economic activities, and to provide them with general recommendations for safe coexistence in the areas near the pipeline.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PPD
The DPP developed by PERU LNG has the following objectives:
- Clearly and precisely inform the population on the activities PERU LNG undertakes to maintain its operations reliable and safe.
- Conduct the annual training and education program on safety in the pipeline focused on the population, as well as the authorities and emergency response teams located within the direct area of influence of PERU LNG.
- Train the population in response to situations involving leaks and emergencies, in order to minimize the impact on the populations adjacent to the pipeline.
- Increase the capacity to detect anomalous situations (natural events, third-party activities and/or leaks) with the support of the population located in the area of influence.
- Raise awareness regarding the importance of notification prior to the execution of activities by third parties related to excavations, construction, agricultural activities, etc. in areas near and/or within the right-of-way of the pipeline.
- Promote cooperation between both local and regional authorities, and the National Police and other Government agencies, to mitigate the risk of third-party impacts, in addition to supporting the assistance provided in case of events involving natural gas leakage and/or emergencies.
WHAT MEASURES DOES PERU LNG implement TO GUARANTEE SAFETY IN THE GAS PIPELINE?
- PERU LNG has implemented protective measures in the populated areas located near the pipeline.
- The walls of the pipeline are thicker than recommended by international standards and are externally coated to prevent mechanical damage and corrosion. The pipeline is also provided with a cathodic protection system along its entire length.
- When crossing rivers or streams, the pipeline is covered with concrete.
- In case of failures, the system will be isolated through block valves.
- PERU LNG supervises all pipeline operations along its route 24/07/365.
- PERU LNG performs maintenance activities on the pipeline in accordance with the industry's best practices, meeting and exceeding the requirements of both Peruvian and international regulations.
HOW TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A LEAK IN THE PIPELINE?
Leaks in gas pipelines are unusual, but in case there is one, you will be able to identify them if you see:
Dust coming out of a hole in the ground.
Continuous bubbles in wet or flooded areas.
Dead or discolored vegetation in an area that should be green.
Fire, if the leak is ignited.
Or, if you hear:
- A blowing sound caused by escaping gas.
- Or if you have witnessed or suspect any action carried out by third parties that could cause damage to the pipeline; in such case, immediately contact PERU LNG.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT A LEAK IN THE PIPELINE?
WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU WISH TO PERFORM?
Agriculture and livestock:
You should not plant deep-rooted trees near the pipeline. Ask PERU LNG before using agricultural tractors near the pipeline.
Construction:
This includes the construction of housing or infrastructure, roads and tracks, as well as laying water and sewage pipes. You must not excavate or carry out construction in any of the areas near the pipeline. Call us if you see any heavy machinery activity near the pipeline.
