PERU LNG contributes to major international study on marine species and environmental impact

26 Jul 2022

In order to support scientific research on environmental impact, the Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment Program (BMAP) of PERU LNG joined the MarineGEO network of coastal observatories, led by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), with the objective of implementing various activities, including the PanAmerican Experiment (PanAmEx); a study that examined 36 points along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, to demonstrate marine species and the increase in predation in warm or tropical areas.

In Peru, PanAmEx was exclusively conducted at the PERU LNG port terminal, where the colonization and growth of marine species on PVC plates was monitored. During this period, 4 researchers from BMAP and PERU LNG, including Bruno Vildoso, who is part of the environmental team, participated in the experiment, photographed the plates, identified the species and collected the necessary information for the team in charge of the study.

The results obtained -published in the prestigious international scientific journal “Science”- confirmed that depredation is more intense in warm climates than in cold waters. Likewise, the adaptation of the marine ecosystem to climate change was revealed, predicting the predation of marine species in tropical waters, which would mean a lower availability of food in the future.

In this way, PERU LNG reaffirms once again its commitment and dedication to the development of scientific research for environmental preservation.
